OS X Mountain Lion received positive reviews, with critics praising Notification Center, Messages, and speed improvements over Mac OS X Lion, while criticizing iCloud for unreliability and Game Center for lack of games. Mountain Lion sold three million units in the first four days, and has sold 28 million units as of June 10, 2013, making it Apple's most popular OS X release. Mountain Lion was the last paid upgrade for an OS X major release, with OS X Mavericks and later being free. Apple later allowed free downloads of the OS, especially for customers of older and no longer officially supported Macintosh computers, starting on June 30, 2021.[3] The same practice was also applied to its predecessor, Mac OS X Lion.
Messages, an instant messaging software application, is added in Mountain Lion. It was announced on February 16, 2012, as part of the OS X Mountain Lion developer preview.[24] Starting with this release, Messages replaced iChat as the default OS X instant-messaging client. A free beta version of Messages was available to download for Mac OS X Lion from the Apple website until June 2012.[25] The final version of Messages was included with the release version of OS X Mountain Lion.[26]
In a friend's Mac, download the desired OS installer (High Sierra in my case for my MacBook Pro Late 2011 - google "How to Download a Full macOS High Sierra Installer App") and create the bootable USB, HDD or even SSD with Disk Creator (2 steps very friendly freeware tool - google "disk creator").

Since you can boot to OS X Yosemite Recovery, you can install Yosemite without the aid of a DVD, flash drive or another Mac. You will need to download free installation files. One download is the installer for a third party disk partitioning tool called "GPT fdisk". The two other downloads are OS X installers from Apple. Basically, you first install Mountain Lion on a new (clean) volume, then use Mountain Lion to install Yosemite on a different new (clean) volume. Finally, the Mountain Lion boot and recovery volumes are converted to free space and the Yosemite volume is expanded to reclaim this free space.
I did download the InstallMacOSX.dmg file for OS X 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion) from How to download macOS on a iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013) with macOS 10.15.7 (Catalina) installed. I was able to create a Mountain Lion bootable installer from this downloaded file. I did not need to use any third party tools (such as SuperDuper) to create the installer. I used the bootable installer to install Mount Lion in a VMware Fusion Player (Version 12.1.0) virtual machine. After installing, I was able to download and install all available updates except for an update to iTunes 12.14.3. I was able to download this update on the host and transfer the update to the virtual machine where installation was successful.
Released in 2011 and 2012, Mac OS X Lion and OS X Mountain Lion were the last paid software updates for the Mac. Ten years ago, users needed to pay Apple $19.99 for the latest version of its OS X, and now you can finally download these two for free.
However, if you have another Mac you can use and a Thunderbolt or FireWire cable, you can shortcut a whole load of the above steps by using your 2nd Mac in Target Disk Mode, thereby freeing you up to unmount, creat coreStorage and the Fusion Drive etc. You can then use the OS X installer downloaded on the 2nd Mac to install it on the new Fusion Drive.
